My oh my...... that was certainly a good one! It started off a bit slow but by 10:30 the room was rapidly filling and the magic of spontaneous music creation was filling the air.
To start, the Muad'Deep, Vox Vespertinus and James Whetzel collaboration was really awesome and hinted at the fun that was yet to come. Here is a short video clip of said awesomenes.
Then came EQlateral. They prove to me with every set why they are one of my favorite Seattle bands. Ethereal, spontaneous, psychoactive.... impressive. Many thanks to John, Sebastian, Peter and Susan for being such an important part to the evening's success.
James Whetzel aka Baba James followed with a "DJ" set of all original music, remixed and arranged on the fly. With the added elements of EQlateral and an enthusiastic audience member, it was certainly a set like none other. Catch a video clip of the "BabaLateral" action here.
I closed off the evening with a set of progressive, breaks and psytrance. I tried to keep it on the more minimal/percussive side so James and EQlateral could lend their respective expertise to fill in the melodic bits. At one point there were 6 of us all doing our thing at the same time! I had a hard time hearing the full composition, so I have no idea how it really sounded, but man was it a fun thing to be a part of. Hopefully you all enjoyed dancing and listening to it as we had doing it. Here's some video of the set.
As a DJ, it was so fun to be jamming with such talented musicians and according to EQlateral, they had an equal amount of fun jamming with DJs. This is exactly the type of event I was hoping it would be. It blurred the boundaries between a traditional concert and DJ show. This must and will happen again! Look for further Beat Council events that will continue playing with this format in an attempt to shake up the same-old-show-different-day formula.
I saw a lot of familiar faces and many new ones. Thanks to everyone that came out to support the show! I hope to see you again at the next one.
