A new rating system would help out a lot!
Posted Friday, January 25th, 2008 at 06:28:25 PM
I believe the rating system here is in need of an overhaul. Why are we allowed to put a rating on our own material? It's really lame to see when someone rates their own mix five stars. Also, what's up with these schmucks who will rate all of your stuff .5 just because you gave them some constructive criticism??? If I were to improve the rating system on this website, I would make it much more specific. There should be a rating system for each and every aspect of the mix. It would include the specific elements with required fields for details so that it is a real critique, and not just a simple good or bad system that any moron can blow through making broad assumptions and judgements.

Item #1: Programming - Track selection and how the songs/tracks are placed together, do they fit? Does the beginning have a smooth intro or a boring two minute lead time into the first track? Does the end have a smooth outro? Is the mix consistent throughout? Does it flow, or is it forced together and awkward?

Item #2: Technical Acceptability - Are the volume levels, equalizion, track blends, special effects, and timing all technically acceptable and tasteful? Does the mix have bass or treble clipping, unmatched beats or trainwrecks? Does the DJ use effects or scratching just enough or way too much? Do tracks play long enough or are they cut too short?

Item #3: Commercial Acceptability - For whom or where can I play this type of mix? At a swanky lounge? A posh nightclub in Vegas or an exclusive club in London or New York? Is it better for a dark seedy warehouse rave? Or is it just for me and my friends to play in our cars or in my bedroom? Who will like this? Is the DJ considering his/her target demographic or just playing what he/she likes to hear?

Item #4: Overall Presentation - Give us your thoughts on what you enjoyed or disliked about the mix. Did you like the title, the artwork, the overall quality of the mix? Was it sophisticated enough for your taste? Was it interesting? Would you buy any of the tracks on the tracklist? Would you listen to another mix by this DJ, go and see them, recommend them to a friend, or book them at your event? Do you have any suggestions or constructive criticism? What is your rating and why?

A combination of these four critical points would do some justice to the rating system on this website, and to the work of the many hard working DJ's and producers who contribute to it. A five star rating for each item, then combined together would give a more indepth and interesting aspect to mix ratings. And, would help people justify their opinions on their own work. There would almost be no more 5 stars for me because I say so, or .5 for this guy or that girl because I don't like the genre they are playing or they made me mad when they said my last mix was in need of some work.
Any Producers in the House?

Nice to see this many people on here! I wish more would get involved. I will try to invite a few more of my friends on here to participate. It would be nice to see some producers on here too. Are there any? Perhaps some musicians or vocalists? I play guitar, bass, do vocals, and I do some remixing if you want to trade tracks.
